CPD Guidelines

Continuing Professional Development — Mandatory for Annual Renewal

What is CPD?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) enables BPERB-registered engineers to maintain, improve, and extend their professional competence throughout their career. CPD is a mandatory requirement for annual registration renewal. Records must be logged on the BPERB portal and supporting certificates uploaded within 4 weeks of completing each activity.

Only activities completed in the 12 months immediately preceding the renewal date are counted toward the annual requirement. All CPD records are subject to audit within 5 years of submission.

Minimum Annual Requirements
Registered Engineer (RE) 20 hrs / year
National PEng 30 hrs / year

How to Submit CPD Records
1. Log Activity

Log each CPD activity on your BPERB member portal immediately after completion. Include activity title, date, duration, category, and provider.

2. Upload Evidence

Upload supporting evidence (certificate, abstract, agenda, or 300–500-word learning report) within 4 weeks of completing the activity.

3. Annual Return

Submit your annual CPD return each January at renewal. The system calculates your total weighted CPD hours automatically.

4. Audit Readiness

Retain original evidence for at least 5 years. Records are subject to random audit by BPERB at any time.

Tips for Maximising CPD
  • Plan CPD activities at the start of the year — do not leave it until January.
  • Presenting at a seminar earns double the hours of attending.
  • A conference paper earns 12 hrs; a Scopus/WoS journal paper earns 24 hrs.
  • MSc/M.Eng. coursework earns 3 hrs per credit hour — efficient for academic staff.
  • IEB/BPERB committee service counts as Category 7 at 1 hr per hour.
  • Keep all certificates, agendas, and abstracts — required evidence during audit.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
  • Failure to meet the minimum annual CPD hours will result in de-registration.
  • Submitting false or unverifiable CPD records is a serious breach of the BPERB Code of Conduct — subject to disciplinary action.
  • Records without supporting evidence will be disallowed during audit.
  • Re-registration after CPD-related de-registration requires a fresh application and full assessment.
