Professor Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam is a distinguished academic, researcher, and consultant in Geotechnical and Earthquake Engineering with over 25 years of experience in teaching, research, and professional consultancy. He holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Civil and Geotechnical Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and completed a research fellowship on Soil-Structure Interaction at École Centrale Paris, France.
Professor Jahangir has contributed extensively to both undergraduate and postgraduate education, laboratory development, and research supervision. His scholarly contributions include 10 journal papers and 36 conference papers in internationally recognized publications, covering topics such as seismic liquefaction, soil dynamics, foundation engineering, and numerical modeling.
Professor Jahangir is a Professional Engineer (PEng), Registered Structural Engineer (RSE-IV), Registered Structural Engineer (RGE-IV), and a RAJUK-enlisted Structural Engineer. He has led and contributed to major national projects in Bangladesh as a Geotechnical Expert, including the Dhaka-Tongi dual-gauge railway project, RAJUK’s risk-sensitive land-use planning, and numerous high-rise and infrastructure developments. His consultancy experience spans foundation design, slope stability, ground improvement, Jetty Design and earthquake-resistant structures.
Professor Jahangir has successfully managed two major research grants, including the World Bank-funded HEQEP project, which strengthened postgraduate research capacity in geotechnical engineering at BUET, and the CCRIP project, which focused on climate-resilient infrastructure in coastal Bangladesh.
He regularly offers professional training and workshops for engineers through qlearn.com.bd and the Directorate of Continuing Education (DCE), BUET, on topics ranging from BNBC 2020 and earthquake engineering to advanced foundation and structural design.
A Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) and Vice-Chairman of the Bangladesh Professional Engineers Registration Board (BPERB), Professor Jahangir is also an active member of the Bangladesh Earthquake Society (BES) and the Bangladesh Society for Geotechnical Engineering (BSGE).
His research, professional service, and mentorship continue to shape the next generation of civil and geotechnical engineers in Bangladesh and beyond.
